Computer shutdowns on starting from hibernation

No, AFAIK.

This machine went through all releases since 8.04. Sometimes the
hibernate feature was broken, but that was a known limitation. It was
working fine since a long time ago (maybe 11.x, 12.04 for sure.)

Nope, just the update. I'm using a Radeon HD6450 with the Free driver.
