Now, I think this step is important as everyone needs to be involved, IMHO :) https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu On the above link/Wiki Page, you will find all the details that you need to know as of now. Regardless of the technical details of this project, myself and my team (Lubuntu) think it is better that all the teams need to be involved. This project has two major advantage. 1- Provide a very good alternative for Windows XP Users. 2- Spread the word of Ubuntu and all its flavor. Personally, whenever I want to start a project, I try to play on many different lines. So, the big target is to reach Windows XP Users but at the very same time, it will be a great way to spread the word even to those who are using other versions of Windows like 7 and 8 :) It is time to reach to more people. It is the time to spread the word of Linux. It is time to show our real strength. Yes, we can do it. No doubt about that. If you are interested, you can find all the details here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu Also, please, feel free to contact me :) By the way, just to keep you up-to-date just in case you missed that. As it is a laptop and I'm not trying add any legacy hardware, my goal was completely eliminate any evidence of BIOS or legacy interfaces. If you are trying to support legacy hardware, this may not work for you. I am also not doing any dual-booting; I cannot comment on how other OSes might like my settings. I set: UEFI Only (a.k.a. no BIOS fallback) Secure Boot Off CSM Support Off If you set all these (or their equivalent) before installing, I think you should be successful. Also, one of my future plans is to start another project, which is actually the advance phase of Start Ubuntu. This new project is called Start Linux. Since the very beginning when I wrote the first draft of Start Ubuntu, I had a vision/plan to carry on with this project beyond Ubuntu and its flavors. Resigning from Lubuntu Team does not mean at all that I will not use Lubuntu, Ubuntu, nor any other variants for good. I have resigned from my roles and positions, that is all :) Just give me few days until I finalize my plans/ideas. Those who are interested in this project, please do sign up on the Wiki Page: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/CommunicationsTeam/WOWLubuntu/StartUbuntu I will keep you updated. Thank you for everyone who replied my first email I sent earlier. I did not get the chance to go through all the replies but hopefully, I can do that soon. This Project must carry on and see the light. I won't fade away. If you need my help, I will be around. Please, don't let this project dies. Please, have faith that we can do it. I'm sure we can. It is not hard at all. Linux has changed my real life so I can imagine it could at least change someone's else life too. Let's work together to achieve our goal. Microsoft Windows is not a very bad system. It is the Company behind it. If they do have little bit of appreciation to all those Windows XP Users who have been using Windows XP for 10 years or more now, they would, at least, tell them there is another alternative which is called Linux. We all know, they do care about money, and nothing else. Anyway, if there is anything you would like to ask, contact me directly if you like. Reply this email, whatever you like. I will do my best to be around. Well, since I have no more tough and hard responsibilities with Lubuntu Team, I guess I will have some time for this :) Let's do it. Thank you! We have a good subforum at Kubuntu Forums dedicated to UEFI questions and answers. I've been spending a fair amount of time with UEFI on my ThinkPads T520 and X1; I've documented what I've learned. I'm also answering questions as they appear. Some 3.8 and early 3.9 kernels have trouble configuring NVRAM variables for bootloaders, but I believe this has been patched in recent builds. Secure Boot is probably OK to disable -- I'm not convinced it reduces risk for J. Random User, and I've disabled it on all my machines. But I don't advise people to switch to BIOS compatibility mode. UEFI is major advancement over BIOS and, once you learn it, you'll never go back. Furthermore, I encourage UEFI users to switch away from GRUB and instead use rEFInd (1). This is an elegant boot manager that greatly simplifies dual-, triple-, nnn-booting. Each time you boot your computer, rEFInd scans all visible partitions for operating systems and displays them in a menu. Hardly any setup is required to achieve this, and you no longer need to worry about OS-specific boot managers. Don't install them at all. Are you sure you need the proprietary driver? Normally the free Radeon driver is way superior for Linux. So unless you need something very specific the free driver doesn't have you should not use the proprietary driver. There aren't all that many, but to me, more than one amount to functional blockers. Where available, KDE3 and TDE still do all I need done. While the mini ISO is handy, it isn't useful for installing on UEFI-based systems that you want to run in UEFI mode. The mini lacks the proper files for booting the computer in UEFI mode. Even though system settings has firefox as my default browser, chrome has somehow swindled my emailer, (alpine), into using chrome instead of firefox. I've seen quite a number of others having similar problems, and I'm sure from the discriptions that many of them have the same cause. There's something the microprocessors use for video that's called, "sse". There are also extensions called, "sse2", "sse3", and, "sse4". If you type: "cat /proc/cpuinfo | grep flags " You may see in the list, "sse sse2 sse3", and/or etc. The latest versions of flash software use sse and sse2. The problem? I have a Pentium 3. Processors under Pentium 4 _don't_have_ sse2 or further up. Don't you just love commercial programmers who can't be bothered to write for everyone, just those who have the newest, latest, greatest machines? I don't think it is limited to commercial programmers. After all the current 32bit Ubuntu kernel doesn't support machines without PAE any more. And I think calling something with SSE2 "the newest, latest, greatest machine" is a bit of an exaggeration. Anyway, it don't work. Gnash does *sorta* work with chrome. It jumps around, stuttering like crazy, and it gets worse if you even think about using the mouse for anything. At least I can use it to check if I want to use downloadhelper in firefox on it, which does still work. Chrome doesn't seem to have that function for linux, just everyone else, which is one of my beefs with it. That, and the fact that it _still_ keeps hy-jacking my system. I've been told that you can in system settings --> file associations --> text for HTML you can make something point to something else in order to cure that, but there's nothing obvious that shows what or how to do that. To be clear, Asrock is not a first tier brand. I bought one once. Not likely I'd ever do it again on purpose. Brands I would buy again include Gigabyte, Foxconn, Asus, Biostar and MSI. Others I would not include PC Chips, ECS & Jetway. Intel I would also if I ever found one with all features I require (e.g. legacy stuff like at least one PS/2 port, and floppy & RS-232 support). -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive." Anyway, first I would check if cron is running with the command ps ax|grep -v grep|grep cron There should be two jobs running: cron and anacron. And if cron is running, it could be a bad line in your crontab. There are two different types of crontab, i.e. the system wide crontab "/etc/crontab" and individual crontabs for the users. The difference is that a line in the system wide crontab has an entry for the user to run the job. But the individual user crontabs don't have that entry and would take the user entry as the command to run. I suppose you are at the wrong place to make the change. I just reread your other thread and I think chrome, firefox and your non-KDE email program don't care about the KDE settings. You should probably check the settings of the email program for the browser it would use. I suppose the default would be "/usr/bin/x-www-browser" which is a link pointing to "/etc/alternatives/x-www-browser" which is again a link which points to the browser which was installed last. If that is the case, you could change the setting with the command sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser in a terminal. It could be cron not running, but that's quite easy to verify using ps(1). Then it could a be a path setup in a bad manner to run your scripts. The easiest way to test if cron is running fine is to place a dummy job like: * * * * * echo "Hello World" >> /tmp/hello.txt and see if the output of the file get increased. If so, then it means that cron is running and your scripts have a problem either in the startup (wrong path) or in the logic. Hope this helps. As you surmised, alpine has quite a number of MIME options, but apperently none for the browser itself in the rc/conf files. I've previously checked both. The update alternatives command is what worked. Never having come across that one before, I can only note once again, that it seems more and more impossible to keep up with all the changes and additions that keep coming down the pipe. It reminds me of the old Lily Tomlin line: No matter how cynical I get, I just can't seem to keep up. :-) Thanks again. Bill
