Thanks David,

I thought about creating an image of each of the drives but I don't have 
suitable drives large enough on hand to hold the images. So, rather than 
muck about any longer I decided to post my laptop drive to a data 
recovery firm. I expect that I'll hear from them towards the end of next 
week. I'll report the outcome.
