Likely that you only need the recommended packages and that you can
completely remove the suggested packages. You can set up Synaptic to
always install recommended packages too, by Synaptic's preferences.

No, at least unlikely, but the GTK upstream seemingly is a band of
idiots. I'm writing from Xfce on Arch Linux, using Evolution. The
culprit for such issues most of the times, if not always, is GTK.
