some file dialogs never display anything

This happened to me a few weeks or months ago, but not anymore. I can't really 
remember what was causing the problem, but I think it had something to do with 
the directory the dialog was trying to show the contents of when it was 
opened, which was the last folder I had used from that application.
Do you know what directory the dialog is trying to show? Try to rename that 
directory so that the dialog opens in your home directory.
Sorry for being so vague, but I really don't remember how the problem was 
solved in my computer.
