KMail Beep. Was: Alternative PIM?

Just got one of those beeps... Attached is a cropped screenshot of a fairly 
typical error message.

The displayed title ("Gmail") is an account name I have set up in:
 Configure Kmail -> Accounts -> Receiving.

This account is configured to check for new mail every 10 minutes. I read the 
other day that IMAP uses something like long-polling, so that client-server 
connections are persistent.. So, should I switch off the "Enable interval 
email checking" option for IMAP accounts?
