Kubuntu Screen status Bar

1. I have reset permissions/ownership wherever there were errors. There are no more such errors.

2. I have rebooted the workstation and the "Application Launcher-> Leave" DOES now contain "Restart" and "Shut Down" option.

3. Everything seems to be OK.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Ramesh

1. Have reset my home directory group id to "users" from "ramesh". The the error: "Home directory /home/ramesh not ours" seems to have been eliminated.

2. But on invoking Firefox for example, I still get errors:

ramesh at mozart:/home$ plasma-desktop(2412) KConfigGroup::readXdgListEntry: List entry Categories in "/home/ramesh/.local/share/applications/MozillaFirefox.desktop" is not compliant with XDG standard (missing trailing semicolon).

3. Application Launcher->Leave does not contain "Restart" and "Shut down" option.

Just an update and seeking help.

Thanks,
Ramesh

Leslie Anne,

1. Thanks a lot. Your advice was very helpful and I was able to set status-bar working properly.

2. However before I received your input, I followed the advice of forum.kde.org site http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=13712.
I interactively issued the commands:

ramesh at mozart:~$ kquitapp plasma-desktop

ramesh at mozart:~$ rm ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
rm: cannot remove `/home/ramesh/.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc': No such file or directory

What we have is not .kde4 but just .kde in the "path". After using right path, rm seems to have worked. But invoking "plasma-desktop" ended in errors as I pointed out in my earlier email.

3. More importantly now in the terminal window there is constant spitting of error/warning messages. A few of them are:

Error: "/var/tmp/kdecache-ramesh" is owned by uid 1000 instead of uid 0.
Home directory /home/ramesh not ours.
plasma-desktop(2393)/plasma StatusNotifierItemSource::refreshCallback: DBusMenu disabled for this application
plasma-desktop(2393)/plasma StatusNotifierItemSource::refreshCallback: DBusMenu disabled for this application

4. Added to my owes, I find in "KDE Application Launcher" in the left hand corner of the status-bar, under "Leave" option, I don't find "restart" or "shutdown" options. They have just disappeared in the process of setting-right/messing-up with other things. How to I get his option in place? I am afraid to forcibly bring down the system.

I would be greatly obliged if you can give some leads/suggestions.

Thanks again,
Ramesh Rao

What you are missing is the widget that sits on the panel and displays those minimized windows. Right click on the panel, choose "Widgets" and along the bottom of the screen the built-in widgets appear. Find the one you need (it has a less than obvious name, but the description is clear), click on it and it will be at the extreme right end of the panel. You can move it where you want it by right clicking the panel and choosing settings.

All,

By mistake I seem to have deleted the "minimized windows" from the status bar. I seem to have clicked on the command "Remove this panel" and now on minimizing any open window, I loose it for good.

I followed the instructions given in link: http://www.ehow.com/how_8388140_reset-taskbar-kubuntu.html. I end up with following error. Essentially rm plasma-appletsrc gives following error.

Highlighted red below. Proceeding further (even though this rm command failed) ended up in series of other errors. Ultimately I find plasma-desktop IS running (pa -A | grep plasma-desktop is successful). How do I kill and run plasma-desktop again?

I am running kubuntu 10.04.4.

I am in urgent need of help..

Thanks,
Ramesh Rao

1. To prevent changed permissions on your user config files, be sure NOT to run gui programs using sudo. Use kdesudo instead, if you need to. This is the most common cause for this to happen.

2. These are just minor warning messages, but not errors. It is just complaining about a slight mis-format of the .desktop file. It can be ignored.
