Just an idea and I don't know if it works because I'm not inclined to 
create a big print job to test it. You could go to the cups interface at 
<http://localhost:631/jobs> and check if there is an option to pause the 
current print job.

Another option is the HP toolbox coming with the package "hplip-gui". 
With that tool you could check the ink levels before you start the print 
job.
