kmail has been a real pain as far as addresses go.   There are many 
incantations you can try to get things to work.

I finally have it all working here (first character starts a list from both 
recent addresses and 'personal contacts')  but I couldn't for the world tell 
you how I got there.

It mostly has to do with akonadi and resources.
