If open-jre is installing but not getting set as your default, then you need to;
sudo update-alternatives  --config java
Then pick the open-jdk

(And just for you, I took the extra effort to scroll down past all
this stuff and bottom post.  Now nobody will be able to read my
response in their preview pane.  Happy now?  Message threading makes
this form of communication outdated, a relic of the old days, as
outdated as Sun-Java6. ;p )
