From gabomdq at gmail.com Wed Aug 1 13:43:29 2012 From: gabomdq at gmail.com (Gabriel Jacobo) Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2012 10:43:29 -0300 Subject: PPA issues Message-ID: Hey everyone! I had the following PPAs enabled in my 12.04 system: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/backports/ubuntu precise main deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu precise main This morning (admitedly without paying too much attention) I got an "available updates" notification from Muon, which I accepted and off it went...until everything stopped working. When I restarted X, KDE wouldn't load, and it turns out it was completely uninstalled (which probably Muon warned me about and I didn't see it) I tried to reinstall the kubuntu-desktop package using apt but it wouldn't let me, so I traced it down to a dependency on libsoprano4 2.7.57, which is not provided by any of those PPAs. To make two hours of troubleshooting short, adding the beta PPA solved the problem: deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/beta/ubuntu precise main After reinstalling kubuntu-desktop everything came back, but this probably means libsoprano4 2.7.57 needs to be placed in one of the other repositories. Next to that word there is an "ant" or some black insect running around. In the beginning I thought it was my screen but I checked this out on another computer and saw the same "insect". If it was a bug I report it to bugzilla but it is only an insect :) Now for my Samba problem. I want to share photos with other people in my family who use Windows. They are all in the same workgroup. The photos I want to share are on a separate disk to my Kubuntu installation but are totally visible on my computer. The photos I want to share have been copied to a folder called "public". All the members of my family "see" my computer but are asked for a user name and password. When trying all known user nams and passwords nothing happens. They cannot see the folder I try to share. Your problem with Samba is one I am very familiar with. It may be related to the security concerns that are rightly front and centre in Linux - or it may be my own failure to adequately master the extensive documentation (or incompetence on the part of some of those who write the code, but I'm not in a position to judge that). I have tried (and failed) off and on for five years to try and get Samba to work consistently on my home network of sometimes up to 10 machines, including Android phones and tablets. Distributing the internet has always worked very smoothly. Sharing files, not so much. I've pretty much given up in favour of sneakernet. That which worked so effortlessly in Windows seems to be impossible in Kubuntu. (MS seems to be ruining even that in Win 7.) When I asked for help, several times, in another 'buntu group the attitude seemed to be "its not a feature I use" or "just type the IP address in" - and even that didn't always work. I'm a great fan of Linux, but that doesn't blind me to its shortcomings. i have learned that Samba sometimes seems to spontaneously change the smb.conf settings to remove the check mark from the requirement to use encrypted encrypted passwords. This disables sharing with Windows. I've also found that asking fora password is just another way of refusing access. Sometimes just stopping and restarting the Samba service and running winbindd (sic) as root gets it going. Using static IP's doesn't seem to matter, in my limited experience. And the problem afflicts sharing between Kubuntu systems too. I just wish someone would fix Samba; simplify it greatly and make it really easy to use. It suffers from a plague of "feature bloat". Many of us would really appreciate a fresh approach for home users that may be a little less secure but useful and foolproof. After all, we are not all running major government departments, and if someone steals my vacation photos I'm not going to go out of business! Wikileaks proved that... Please understand, I'm not bashing Kubuntu or Linux. I use it daily and love it. The only Windows I own came with the computer and I keep it for the sake of the few bits of software that won't run under Wine and yet are needed to set up or maintain things like eye.fi, Kobo etc. I detest the predatory policies of MS and consider it a third rate operating system. Many of us have been thoroughly frustrated by the problem of file sharing for too long. Could we have a little help here? What I am hoping for is a true peer to peer experience. I would like to be able to share any file (and any printer) from any computer to all the rest. I would like to have a "sharing" password that can be given to others do I won't have to give out my personal password. As a long time net admin I can't break myself of the habit of keeping passwords entirely to myself. Is this what you are able to do? I'm not a novice and I don't want any software to beat me. When I wrote my Windows 95 MS exam years ago I was told that I had obtained a very high mark and I don't see why I shouldn't become equally proficient in Kubuntu. I do use Gadmin-samba but of give it up in a heartbeat if it odd messing things up! Best wishes, Leslie Anne PS: I retired 10 years ago but have managed to keep up to date in every way but Samba. I did not have that experience but had I not done "dist-upgrade" x number of packages would have been kept back or removed o perhaps that is/was the problem? Otherwise quite happy w 4.9 so far, had some initial glitches (all desktop widgets "disappeared", had to be reinstalled but were marked as installed??) but so far so good otherwise. KDEPIM 4.9 way better though Kmail still get hickups randomly. such as mail already income reappears on next start/boot, filters suddenly stop working and application has to be restarted. As a start to get a somewhat working system, you could rename your /etc/X11/xorg.conf and restart KDM. Use these commands from the command line: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak sudo stop kdm sudo start kdm That should start KDM with the Nouveau driver. Then you can have a look at this page, hoping to find a fix for your problem there: If that doesn't help, please tell us which Kubuntu version you are using and if it is the Nvidia driver provided by the Kubuntu repository or if it is the driver downloaded from the Nvidia site. I was also asked to create a separate 1MB BIOS Grub partition before proceeding but I choose to ignore it cause I had the UEFI boot disabled. Now, after installation, the system just loads Windows 7. I cannot see the Kubuntu grub/login screen. So, I went to the BIOS and saw that under boot options, it is still set to Windows bootloader option. So, what do I do now? Should I change the boot entry in the BIOS?If so, then to what(Windows recognizes the new Linux partition as 'D' Drive)? I don't want to remove Windows but dual boot. When it says grub will be installed on /dev/sda it means the Master Boot Record (MBR) section of that disk, the first 512 bytes, not the whole disk. So it would replace the Windows boot loader and should list both operating systems. I am not that familiar with UEFI, but I would hazard a guess that since you are not installing the 1MB partition like it is asking, grub is not getting installed at all. I think the installer is being overly helpful and detects the UEFI is there and assumes it is active. I think there is an advanced option somewhere that gives you more control were grub gets installed, but if you can't find it, try again and let it make the partition. Trying to search for a subject like "internet" that I knew should result in hundreds of hits I would get just a few. At KDE Forums I found a "sticky" topic about Akonadi and Nepomuk that lead me to look at a file /HOME/.kde/share/config/akonadi_nepomuk_feederrc I edited these lines to these values: InitialIndexingComplete=false and DisableIdleDetection=true the first one seems to advice the system indexing is done (it was set to true) and the second one to use CPU regardless of state (it was set to false). Saved the file and did from konsole akonadictl stop, akondictl start. Watched cpu getting crazy with virtuoso-t eating my CPU and let it take time. Now searches on Subject, From, To etc takes a little bit time but seems accurate like in thousands of results in "from: anna" being 1 friend 1 colleague and several years of mails saved. Now cpu has calmed down and the ......rc file states InitialIndexingComplete=true though I left it at the ....Detection=true YMMV but for me now search seems working and accurate. I have upgraded over the years so my "rc-files" are years and years old so this may only impact for those who upgrade and save their settings/data - if so I think it is a good pointer to the packagers that some files should be edited/deleted on upgrade best regards Sinclair From pwhite at bluewin.ch Sat Aug 18 10:32:23 2012 From: pwhite at bluewin.ch (Perry) Date: Sat, 18 Aug 2012 12:32:23 +0200 Subject: kate show whitespace In-Reply-To: <502F0648.3070408@joines.org> References: <502F0648.3070408@joines.org> Message-ID: <5492824.MF22iorpUU@perry-vg020aa-uuz-p6111ch> Le vendredi, 17 août 2012 20.04:40 Jason Paul Joines a écrit : > I'm using Kubuntu 12.04.1. But, I got it working and below are the details: *Model*: Asus U47A *Operating System*: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit UEFI mode So, Windows was installed in EFI mode. The Asus BIOS supported both the legacy boot and UEFI boot. So, the aim was to install both Xubuntu and WIndows in the same boot mode. There are instructions to install Ubuntu in UEFI mode but I was not feeling confident to take that approach. So, I took the latter one and dual booted Windows and Xubuntu in legacy mode. *Warning*: You will format your entire computer. So, make sure to make the back up discs and take the necessary back up. If GPT partitioning or UEFI boot is important to you, then this method is not for you! *Steps*:- 1. Go into BIOS and disable UEFI. Save settings and restart and go into BIOS again. 2. If somewhere there is a setting to delete boot options then delete all the boot options. Else skip this step. Even though I am pretty sure that you cannot delete CD/DVD from boot option but if you can then don’t do it. Save all settings and restart and go into BIOS again. 3. Put your windows DVD in the optical drive. 4. Somewhere (mostly on the last tab of your BIOS if it’s an Asus laptop) you will find an option for boot override. Select your DVD drive and press enter. Remember that this boot over ride option should NOT contain UEFI in it’s name. 5. You will now boot from windows DVD non-UEFI mode. 6. During windows installation select “custom install” and then delete all existing partitions on your harddisk. Create partition for windows. When creating this partition windows will automatically make another small partition of about 100MB size as system reserved. Leave the rest of the unallocated space for now. We will take care of that space while installing Ubuntu. Install windows now, 7. Now even after deleting all the partitions , there will be still some GPT data left on the hard drive. As, long as you don't remove it, Xubuntu won't recognize your windows installation. So use a utility called 'fixparts' and delete all the GPT data. 8. Once that is done put your Ubuntu CD in the drive and boot from it again. 9. During installation of Ubuntu select the option “do something else” and create a primary partition for Ubuntu. 10. Now after creating partition for Ubuntu click on the rest of the unallocated space and click on create new partition again. But this time slected extended partition 11. Once you create extended partition you should be able to see all your unallocated space in a sub menu under this newly created extended partition. In this unallocated space you make rest of your partitions like linux-swap (necessary for linux to work efficiently and for hibernate to work correctly) and other partitions for your data. 12. Make sure that the bootloader device is sda without any partition number after it. 13. Proceed with installation. If everything goes well you should be able to dual boot to both Ubuntu and Windows. *Note*:- For hibernation/trackpad/other issues , I suggest running Kernel 3.5 or above as it includes a lot of fixes. Also, intel rc6 graphics power saving option was disabled by default for me. So, enabling it boosted battery life by 2 hours!! I hope this helps someone. Cheers, Jayneil. I think there is too much difference between 10.04 and 12.04... wait less than too months and get 12.10 (you could get it and install it) though it's unstable. You can only jump from one release to the next release or from one LTS release to the next LTS release. Therefore your path would be 10.10 -> 11.04 -> 11.10 -> 12.04 LTS. But frankly, as every step takes quite some time, I would install 12.04 LTS instead of upgrading. However I would make sure at the partitioning step that I would reuse the existing partition and NOT format it. Then the /home folder should be preserved. Even though I did this successfully several times already, I would still make a backup of my valuable data before the install because you never know if something goes wrong. One final warning: 12.04 comes with the new kmail2 which is not yet production ready IMHO. Nils From o.sinclair at gmail.com Thu Aug 30 07:24:53 2012 From: o.sinclair at gmail.com (O. Under gnome you need to be in the dailout group for it to work. Grub is now Grub2 and does not use menu.list any more. You should read up on the new config settings for it at the grub2 site. You must be living in down-under if you mix-up above and below. (SCNR) More seriously: Usually the command sudo update-grub should find your XP and add it to the grub menu. OTOH, I'm not sure if it would search on other disks than sda. So this is what an entry in "/boot/grub/grub.cfg" for sda1 should look like: menuentry "Microsoft Windows XP (on /dev/sda1)" { set root=(hd0,1) chainloader +1 } I would assume that you should replace the line "set root=(hd0,1)" with "set root=(hd1,5)", but I have no chance to test it myself. You could add the menu entry to the end of the file "/etc/grub.d/40_custom". Then run the command sudo update-grub and reboot. Now you should see the extra entry for XP.
