Answering myself:

Found some answers and a solution :-)

nigel at netbook:~$ xinput -list
⎜ ↳ FSPPS/2 Sentelic FingerSensingPad id=13 [slave pointer (2)]

nigel at netbook:~$ dmesg
[ 19.200104] psmouse serio2: sentelic: Finger Sensing Pad, hw: 13.2.1, sw: 1.0.0-K

nigel at netbook:~$ synclient -l
Couldn't find synaptics properties. No synaptics driver loaded?

nigel at netbook:~$ cat /proc/bus/input/devices
I: Bus=0011 Vendor=0002 Product=000f Version=0000
N: Name="FSPPS/2 Sentelic FingerSensingPad"
P: Phys=isa0060/serio2/input0
S: Sysfs=/devices/platform/i8042/serio2/input/input10
U: Uniq=
H: Handlers=mouse1 event10
B: PROP=0
B: EV=7
B: KEY=670000 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
B: REL=143

It is a known issue that the Sentelic FingerSensingPad (touchpad) is recognized as a ps2 mouse.

A solution that is quite easy can be found on comment #3 on this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1502560

Hope this helps others

Nigel

P.S. I did read one comment on another board somewhere that the newer 3.3 kernels recognize the
Sentelic FingerSensingPad correctly.
