Yes, stdout is 1. From "man e2fsck":
| -C fd
[...]
| If the file descriptor specified is 0, e2fsck will print a
| completion bar as it goes about its business. This requires that
| e2fsck is running on a video console or terminal.
That's why I suggested "-C 0". I would expect the output to go to a
video console, if you have no "splash" option for the kernel command
line.
