What's your video card? For integrated intel graphics there is a gui config tool for monitors is called krandrtray (availalbe through system settings or as a standalone), the cli version is xrandr.
Depending on your hardware you may be able to get the config you need using krandrtray and have it stick. I've found that I needed to write a minimal /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but you can figure out what you need by playing around with xrandr
I think there are similar tools for other video cards

Can anybody tell me where to go from here?
I've plugged a spare monitor into the video socket on my
laptop. When I switch on I get the boot-up script OK coming
up on the 2nd monitor, I get the blue background with
kubuntu 10.10 on the 2nd monitor OK, but it goes totally
blank as soon as the login window comes up on the laptop.
I've searched system settings and can find nothing to help,
doesn't mean it's not there though, knowing me.
