Screen Wierdness

I'm running 10.04, and something strange just happened.  My tape
drive latched up, and though it seems ok now, when I tried to
re-boot out of it, the shutdown process latched up too.  So I
punched the soft re-boot button, and the usual screen resolutions
are gone, and replaced by some not so great ones.  Also the tool
bar across the bottom now only goes half way across.

This has happend a few times before, but usually everything comes
back after re-booting once more.  Not so this time.

Anyone seen a fix for this, or have a clue as to what's going on?
