Apparently. I have it set up as a USB printer and that works. It also
appears as a printer option when I go to print something and it does work with
the USB cable connected.

What I'm trying to do is set it up also as a wireless printer. (The P1102w
does not have an ethernet interface.) It's when I try to install it as a
wireless printer that I need the proprietary driver-plugin.

After several email exchanges with HP support in which they kept referring me
to the web site with HPLIP (which I already have), they gave up and told me
they only support Windows.

The question is: What does the driver-plugin do? It doesn't seem to enable
the wireless connection; my router can see the printer as an attached device.
But if it's just a print driver, I would think I already have it for the USB
printer. But if so, where is it and what's its name?
