If your printer is USB, then kubuntu should find it and set it up
without you having to
do anything - but....
When I have had trouble with running my HP printers on a new computer I
go to this URL
<http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/supported_devices/index.html>
answer its questions and download the .deb or .bin it points me to. I
then compare this
filename with what I can find in KPackageKit and decide which package
I'm going to install:
have a look around for what non-working printers are installed and
remove/un-install them.
Un-install any hplip that may be there.
  Install your choice of hplip and run hp-setup from the command line,
this has always eventually
worked for me though with a some cursing because HP software can be a
little frustrating at times.
Do hp-setup first before trying K>hardware>printer_configuration because
of conflicts with cups
which might force you to have one printer with two separate names, e.g.
