Sound Problems

i am not sure when, or after what upgrades this problem started, it has
been a while since i played any of these games.
i tried playing half life 2 through wine, the sound was good, but in
about 2 minutes, it went off, and didnt come back, until i restarted the
game. i figured it's a wine issue. specially since different other
games, under wine, did the same thing.
i tried running doom3 (native linux version, no wine), the sound seemed
fine at first, but after few minutes it goes off for a little while, and
comes back laggy. no stuttering, no noise, perfect sound, just 30 to 60
seconds late.
i googled for this one first, and i saw a suggestion to add:

+set s_alsa_pcm plughw:0 +set NumberOfSpeakers 2

as parameters to doom3, and the result was perfect. all sound problems
in doom3 went away.

so i am guessing, it's some recent change in the sound architecture. i
have alsa installed, and in linux game (apart from doom3), i have no
sound problems whatsoever. i just don't know how to start debugging the
wine problem. wine shows OSS and alsa. selecting OSS produces no sound
in games. the "test sound" always produces sound. any pointers to what
changed recently, would much appreciated.

wine version: wine-1.3.5-388-gf216dba (compiled from source)
KDE 4.6 RC2 (from PPA)
kubuntu maverick
