Then it's not the apt cache lock but the dpkg lock.
However, I'll be careful to do the recommended method per
http://askubuntu.com/questions/15433/fixing-could-not-get-lock-var-lib-dpkg-lock

I'd rather try the following first .....

sudo dpkg --configure -a
sudo apt-get -f install
