The CTL-ALT-Fx  function has been there pretty much since day-one of the X 
server.....

F1 thru F6 will take you out of the X environment and put you at a real 
console login  (or session if you've been there before)  

Once you are at the console level,  ALT-Fx  (1 thru 6) will move you from one 
console session to another.  ALT-F7  will take you back to the X session.

Not sure about the ALT-F8 session, but sometimes it shows the boot messages.
