OK, did that, and it was helpful for finding a lot of other people who have
the same problem; thank you.
It looks like the workaround is a patch that has to be applied to the FF
configuration files. I'll have to ponder whether I want to run the risk of
breaking my wife's FF installation. On the whole, I suspect it's better not
to have the icons than run the risk of breakage... at least everything
still works at the moment.
