I did the find, and found a couple of things in /var/tmp and /var/cache 
that needed the chown.  Didn't help.  htop says there is no trace of X 
running, so I'll have to wade through the snow and go login from its own 
console, which should fix the rest of it I hope.

Then of course I'll probably be back to square one as far as my being able 
to save an email into my home dir on that box.  Murphy is alive and well.  
Drinks all my beer when I'm not looking too...
