official nVidia driver causes Xorg to burn up CPU, freeze system

You don't have to. It's a know bug[1]
The workaround is using a more recent nvidia-driver.

I'd love to see a working driver in the stable version of Kubuntu, but 
currently, you'll have to do it yourself.
