OpenOffice is really slow when saving a file

You didn't say what your hardware was, but those are classic symptoms of
running from virtual memory, aka swap. I just installed 10.04 LTS on my
milling machine, which only has half a gig of ram, and if it sits
overnight, it will take several minutes to launch emc the next morning, but
once its running, everything is fine. The old install of 6.06LTS, had no
such problems ever.
top or htop, which I like better, can show you if your are using swap
memory.
I just logged in and checked that machine, and it is 138 megs into swap
right now. Ridiculous.
