vnc to KDE desktop UGLY; vnc to Gnome desktop OK

I have installed xinetd, vnc4server 4.1.1, and xvnc4viewer 4.1.1 in a
[K]ubuntu 10.04 lucid system and configured xinetd to start vnc sessions
and allow login via kdm.
I have several [K]ubuntu 8.04 systems configured this way and they work
great whether logging into a KDE or Gnome desktop session.
I copied my 8.04 xinetd.d/vncserver config but had to remove the
"-extension XFIXES" from server_args to get it to work.
It works -- kind of.
When the user logs in and selects a Gnome Desktop, the desktop looks
good but it is a Gnome desktop and some of the things like Session, Save
appear to be missing when accessed via kdm.
When the user logs in and selects a KDE Desktop, the desktop is very,
very ugly and unuseable. For example, the fonts do not show up in the
menu so I have only icons. The task bar is so dithered it is
unreadable. Everything comes up enough to recognize if you're familiar
with it but it is all but unreadable.
The logs/error messages imply -depth 24 is being used.
I have run across other queries about this same problem but have found
no solutions.
Does anyone have a solution or suggestions?
Thanks
