I have an HP 5180 all-in-one printer connected directly to a USB port, and for
me works quite well.
The scanner I'm using is XSane Image Scanner, version 0.996; it detects
correctly the device and works very well.
I have also HPLIP installed, version 3.10.2, device manager 15.0 (Qt4) and the
command present in the settings for the scanner is:
/usr/bin/xsane -V %SANE_URI%
Maybe you lack of some driver, but please look at this page:
