Scanner Question

I have an HP 4100 all in one printer connected directly to a USB port. I 
was having some issues with it as a printer after a clean install of 
10.04 and found it was a bad cable. Replaced that and that part now 
works fine.

I just can't use the scanner part.

I've never had any issue on previous versions/machines.  So far I've 
tried different ports. Checked to make sure that all the requisite 
software is installed [ sane, hplip, etc. ], and even marked it for 
re-install via Synaptic.

I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions. I really need the scanner more than 
the printer.
