Disappearing desktop icons on KDE4.5

I upgraded my wife to 10.04 with KDE 4.5.  Going with 4.5 was probably
a mistake as there have just been a world of troubles.  Some of which
I've fixed, some she can live with, and this one.

Whenever she logs in (it's set to auto-login her account) her desktop
is empty.  The background is correct, but there are no icons on it.

If I open up the "Folder View Settings" I can see that she is set to
"Folder View" displaying her Desktop folder, just the way she wants
it.  But no images of her desktop entries is on the desktop.

I switch from "Folder View" to "Desktop" (which doesn't show the
desktop anymore--does anyone use that?) and apply, then switch back to
"Folder View" and apply.  Suddenly all the icons representing items in
her Desktop folder appear.

This happens every time she logs in.  Anyone know why?  Or how to fix it?
