Pulseaudio vs. Skype: no webcam mic

I just acquired a Logitech C905 webcam, it produces video out of the
box with Ubuntu (the reason that I bough it). However, I am having
trouble getting the internal mic to work with Skype. The Skype
configuration is set to accept input from PulseAudio (the only
available choice). The Kmix mixer shows two Capture Devices (the
regular 3.5 banana mic, and the webcam mic) however only the regular
internal mic produces results. Both sliders are to the rightmost
position (I checked to be sure that rightmost is Volume Up), and I
have tried the four permutations of one having each device in
mute/unmute mode. The 3.5 banana mic produces sound when it is
enabled, regardless of the mute/unmute status of the webcam mic, and
the webcam mic produces no sound, regardless of the status of the 3.5
banana mic.

Googling the problem I see that people have solved the issue by
removing or disabling Pulseaudio. I would rather keep Pulseaudio and
fix the problem as I intend to use other Pulseaudio features in the
future.

Thanks for any ideas.
