Yes, you are thinking right. In the first mail he said it is Maverick 
but to the suggestion to use pavucontrol he replied that he doesn't use 
pulse audio.

Yep, if he's using 10.10 with pulse, then pavucontrol should be the 
answer. Maybe he just wasn't aware that you get pulse audio 
automatically when you install Maverick and you have to manually remove 
it if you don't want it.
