[lucid] audiocd:/MP3 is empty; how to fix?

I recently purchased a CD wanted to rip it to add to the collection on my
hard drive.
This is (I think) the first time I've tried to do this with lucid, but it
worked fine in karmic.
But when I open audiocd:/MP3, the virtual directory is blank. It seems that
something in the upgrade from karmic to lucid must have disabled the
capability to grab tracks from this virtual directory and copy them to the
hard drive.
What do I need to do to re-enable this feature? I looked in System Settings
| Advanced | Audio CDs | MP3 Encoder and everything looks right... but I
expect that that simply makes sure that the actual MP3 encoding is
performed correctly, which is a different issue from displaying the
contents of the audiocd:/MP3 virtual directory. I don't see where to
control the latter.
FWIW, the audiocd:/Ogg Vorbis directory is also blank.

PS The karmic -> lucid update was done several months ago, using the usual
online upgrade path.
