Have you tried - after the failed login - to go to the console using CTRL-ALT-
F1, login with you username an password and look through the logs:
~/.x-session-errors
And:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
To see if there are any apparent error messages. You can do so using the
'less' utility e.g. 'less ~/.x-session-errors'.
