Use pavucontrol, set your system to plain-jane stereo for speaker
selection output. This should work just fine. Play with it, check your
output devices, etc, in the config. Then pay back some audio file. Click
the playback tab WHILE THE AUDIO FILE IS PLAYING and note if the slider
is set to at least 85% and that the little horizontal VU meter is moving
with the audio playback. Make sure the correct output device is
selected. If not, click on that and select the output device you wish to
use. You should be hearing sound, at this point. On my 5.1 speaker to my
soundcard setup I had to finally select 4.0 sound. Why? Maybe my
ownboard sound chip setup is flawed. It recommends running some windows
setup file on a CD. Well, that has no bearing on Linux, but 4.0 sounds
great and I get output from all of my speakers. So, I'm happy. Go
figure. Ric
