How best to activate a mobile internet modem/ SIM card @ Kubuntu Karmic?

In addition to my previous message:
A few minutes ago, I DID manage to get the HUAEI E 1820 modem working
at the Windows 7 partition of my laptop - an Eee PC 1008 HA. So, it is
clear now that there is "only" a software problem to solve. Within a
few minutes, there was a working internet connection.
