I think the hubs are internal to the machine as I connect both mouse and

I don't know much about the internals of USB, but it does look as if the
power is dropping. Without the power, I assume the devices disappear.
LATER:
I've finished downloading a torrent and now the mouse seems fine - no
blackouts... curiouser and curiouser...
