default audio selection

In Karmic, how do you select the default audio?? I have a system
soundcard and a usb headphone. Is there a simple way to switch them on
the fly?? I had just licked in jaunty with asoundconf-gtk, but there are
some alsa utils missing in Karmic so that doesn't work anymore. Thanks!
I'd just like to select the one appropriate when I need to change my
sound output.  Ric
