I have a mythbuntu server that has been updated from 8.04 to 9.10 with very 
few issues. This I think is down to two things:

- Never install anything that doesn't need to be there. My desktop is tweaked 
and experimented with to death. My server is untouched.

- Wait a few weeks before upgrading :)
