I don't have knowledge of that modem, but I know ubuntu kernels had issues with modems based on Huwaei chipsets - if your dmesg output includes any information that includes 'Huwaei' (I may have spelled that wrong) then you are probably out of luck. They are supposed to be fixed in Lucid.
