Kubuntu/Ubuntu does not remove everything from memory at shutdown

Assuming you checked that it was running before you issued the pkill, 
you either didn't reboot or missed the Firefox window that was 
automatically started.
I don't think there are any other options in your case, unless there 
is a way to start FF headless, which I doubt...
