Black screen upon starting up Kubuntu

I would but I can't be sure it's not my hardware.  I've got an EVGA 780i 
mainboard and the bios decides to get corrupted every year or so.  It plays 
games with the hard drive controllers and PCI bus.  After I flash to the newest 
bios it takes a while before it settles down and goes fast and strong for 
another couple of months - until the next time.  The utter FAIL happened a 
little while ago and it was still being difficult as of last week.  My /tmp got 
hosed and I had to install 9.04 in another partition to clean it up and have a 
working computer for two days.  It would not even boot from a USB then either.  
No problems since then so I'll probably reinstall 10.04 this weekend.
