Problems with sound in Lucid

this might be a very silly attempt, but it gave me 2 days of headaches
till i solved my sound problem.

single-click on the speaker icon in your notification bar. the volume
control opens, click "mixer", and the full mixer window opens. make sure
everything is raised to max, and nothing is muted.
2 lucid installs here, both had several muted, or very low, in
particular, PCM was what was causing all this silence in several
programs like firefox and wine programs/games.
