How do I unhide boot menu in 10.04 LTS?

I googled for ages but found nothing. I have to boot from CD and change
"default" in grub.cfg.
Timeout is set to the default setting of 10 seconds and escape doesn't work.
Amazingly this makes it harder for a seasoned user than for a newbie who
would just wait or hit enter.
