Lucid keeps freezing up

The reset button generates an ACPI event which causes the computer to shut down, so software is involved. However for this not to work it suggests a very low-level kernel crash or infinite loop. Your fans going full speed may also indicate either of those things. Try selecting a different kernel at boot time and see if it fixes things.
