Desktop settings and configuration disappeared (repeatedly)

I had something similar happen a little bit ago.  Except that my system
changed from kde to gnome.  As far as I know my mouse slid down to the
lower  left edge of the screen and poof!  Everything changed.  I have no
systray now.  Can you tell me in  more detail how to get to this edit mode?
