Yes you can - in most cases the installer will find XP and suggest 
"co-existence"

Not many issues, most security "built-in". Update your software, don't 
act stupid on internet

Try downloading a Live CD or DVD. Boot using that and see how your 
system works and how you find it. It will be slow as it runs from a 
cd/dvd but you should find out what works or not.
