It looks suspiciously like a shadow effect on a tiny invisible window. Perhaps 
it's a bad  icon or something like that. If you are using desktop effects (3d) 
then that could be what it is.
Check what's running (ctrl+alt+esc) and perhaps you will find the suspect.
