No plasma desktop nor panel after upgrade to KDE SC 4.4 beta 2

This is strange (slightly trimmed for brevity):

karmic1 at kubuntu:~$ plasma-desktop
The program 'plasma-desktop' is currently not installed.  You can
install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin
plasma-desktop: command not found
karmic1 at kubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get install kdebase-workspace-bin
kdebase-workspace-bin is already the newest version.
