Thanks Clay and also Steve, 
that helped

I installed gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg.
At first subtitleeditor only played the sound on direct vidéo and only the 
picture using external video. Also MPlayer had no more sound...then it 
straightened out.
I changes options/preferences/video to: X Window system without Xv and now it 
works, although somewhat buggy

Bug: click on .srt, then open .flv and windows disappears
But: open subtitleeditor, open .srt, open .flv and it works

I'll first try to explore what the program offers now then later
I may try to install medibuntu and see if it gives me "extras"
