20100227KU -- Bottom-Panel Difficulty

Greetings --

As most of you know, I have been working very hard -- with a LOT of help 
from Kubuntu-Users! -- to get multi-media working on my Jaunty system.  
If I don't have it, I am very close to having it; THANKS to all.

Now, however, my bottom-panel has changed quite dramatically -- for the 
worse.  I used to have K-Launcher and several other items on the left 
end and quite a few items (KMail, Volume-Control, Virtualbox-OSE, 
Networking, etc.) in the system tray (at the right end of the panel).  
Now those icons are "missing"; there is a black panel present; and there 
is (above the black panel) a dark blue line with cyan "dashes".  A 
couple of icons seem to appear in the general system tray area.

I have looked around a little, but have found nothing (even "add 
widgets") that actually works -- let alone a way to recover my previous 
set-up.  Can anyone tell me what it is that I am too dense to see that I 
should be doing?  My sincere THANKS for any pointers!!!
