I have tried both this and the suggestion from Nils that I try --
sudo dpkg --configure -a
and then try the update again. Each approach causes a lot of work to be
done, and the final lines say --
Errors were encountered while processing:
  /var/cache/apt/archives/sun-java6-bin_6.16-Oubuntu1.9.04_i386.deb
  /var/cache/apt/archives/sun-java6-jre_6-16-Ou7buntu.9.04_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

THANKS for all the ideas; I feel as if I am headed backwards!
